International Speakers

Kim Toufectis, Master Planning Program Manager, NASA (Keynote and Parallel Sessions)

S-Lab is delighted to have a keynote, and two subsequent breakout sessions, delivered by Kim Toufectis, . Over 40,000 people work at various NASA operational and research facilities, which have an asset value of over $23 billion. Kim will address questions such as what factors must be taken in account when designing science facilities for future decades? and how can scientists, facilities and technical staff, contractors and sub-contractors, be brought together to deliver successful projects? See a 2008 article about him here, and his LInkedIn profile here.

Dr Graham Shimmield, Executive Director and President, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences (Dinner Speaker and Parallel Sessions)

Prior to joining Bigelow (whose new facilities are shortlisted for the S-Lab 2015 Awards) in 2008 Graham was the combined Director of Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS) and the NERC-funded Institute, within the Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory. From 1997-2008 he also helped to create the new University of the Highlands and Islands, chairing the research programme. Before that he was Reader in Chemical Oceanography at the University of Edinburgh. Graham's many ouside interests include chairing the joint industry Scientific Advisory Board examining the challenges of decommissioning oil and gas installations in the North Sea. See more information about Graham here.

Other S-Lab invited speakers in parallel sessions include:

Brian Best - Brian is Facilities Manager in the College of Science at Massey University, New Zealand. He will describe, in two sessions, the flexible design, health and safety, lean staffing and space efficiency and technical support initiatives which led Massey to be shortlisted for the 2015 S-Lab Awards. See more information here.

Peter Boogard - Peter is Director of The Paperless Lab Academy, a Conference based network for those interested in data integration, analysis and management in laboratories. The (free) 2015 Conference was described by Science Computing World as "possibly the most interesting and thought-provoking event dealing with laboratory informatics". Peter is running a short session, and a longer masterclass, on the topic.

Sudhakar Reddy - Sudhakar is Coordinator of the Sustainable Labs programme at the University of Michigan. This has audited 110 labs and its achievements include a ‘Shut the Sash’ campaign that has saved $1.2 million pa of energy, local PIAB vacuum systems that have eliminated 200 water aspirators and created water savings of $280,000 pa; recycling of 1500 gallons, and 500 lbs of surplus and unopened chemicals, annually saving $120,000 and $25,000 respectively on annual purchase and disposal costs. See: www.ocs.umich.edu/labs.html for more information.

There also a number of people from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA presenting as part of premium exhibitor and sponsor sessions.
